MEET THE COACHES

 

ERIC MADERA

Eric has been a track coach for 10 years at West Torrance High School, and is now in his third season of head coaching for the team. He graduated from Cal State University, Fullerton in 2018 with a BS in Kinesiology with a focus on Sport Studies. Eric was also part of the track program at Cal State Fullerton for two years.

In the beginning of 2019 he received his certification for personal training from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).

During his time as a track coach at West High School, he coached multiple school record holding athletes as well as CIF Finalists and Champions.

Eric specializes in improving his athletes’ speed and acceleration as well as implementing strength and conditioning programs for athletes of any sport. He also enjoys providing training sessions for the every-day person looking to get into shape or start a weight loss program through fitness.

DAMEION “LUCKY” SMITH

Dameion is the co-head coach of South Bay Speed Team. His focus lies in the long, triple, and high jump events. Coach Lucky has been a visible member of Cal State LA Athletics since his days as a track and field student-athlete. Smith won California Collegiate Athletic Association championships in the long jump and triple jump in 2013 and earned All-West Region honors in both events that same year. He was also the Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award winner from Cal State LA in 2013. That award honors student-athletes for their work in the classroom, in competition and in community service.

Dameion is also the event and facilities manager for the CSULA Golden Eagles. He has been involved in game operations for the Los Angeles Galaxy, Los Angeles Kings and Los Angeles Clippers since his graduation from Cal State LA. He has coordinated Jr. Clippers training camps and clinics and facilitated the implementation of the LA Clippers/NBA Got Skills Competition.

SHEA WISSLER

Shea is the every-man of South Bay Speed Team. His specialties lie in the hurdles and jumping events, but as a decathlete he has competed in nearly every event track and field has to offer.

Shea graduated from West High in 2018 where he was a multiple time CIF qualifier in jumps and hurdles as well as obtaining West Elite status. This is also where he started his journey with the decathlon, culminating in competing at the Arcadia Invite. He then went on to compete at El Camino College where he qualified for the state championship meet in the decathlon.

After his time with El Camino College, he went on to compete for UC Santa Cruz where he experienced the bulk of his athletic success. He was voted twice as the UCSC male field athlete of the year, once as the male student athlete of the year, multiple NCAA all region honors, qualified twice for the NCAAs, set two UCSC school records in the decathlon and the heptathlon, and earned All American honors in the heptathlon in 2023.

ALEC FRONING

Alec is what we like to call a player/manager, which means not only does he help coach but he also competes for South Bay Speed Team! He specializes in the 200 and 400m sprints, boasting an impressive 49.98 PR in the quarter mile event. He competed at West Torrance HS, El Camino college, and finished his collegiate career at Cal State Northridge as part of their division 1 track and field program.

Alec studied kinesiology as his major at CSUN. He graduated from the program in May of 2023 and he plans to put some of the knowledge he has gathered to good use to help athletes reach their goals.

Throughout his running career Alec has been a multiple time league champion and CIF qualifier along with helping to set two school records at West Torrance HS. He was also a regional qualifier for El Camino College.
